Dancer Double Take: A Look Inside Hollywood Dance Doubles!

With Hollywood pumping out fantastic dance films right, left and center, it could be time for you to consider, who could you double for? Dance Spirit Magazine’s Jen Jones gave us an inside glimpse into the world of some of the most renowned dance doubles out there.

“With technology, pretty much anything is possible onscreen these days—but no visual effects can compare to the feeling of watching a dancer take the floor for real. That’s where a dance double comes in. Dance doubles step in for actors when scenes call for highly technical dance moves. Thanks to clever camera work, audiences often don’t notice the swap.”

In House Exams: Feedback!

After a great week of in-house exams we though it would be nice to share some feedback that can help you bring your examinations to the next level!

First and foremost, body language! No matter where you are in the room, the examiners can see you, so even when you are not performing your posture and body language can say a lot. It is important to always keep your composure because any fidgeting or fussing (fixing your hair, body suit etc.) can bring negative attention your way.

Secondly, trust yourself! You have been working hard all year on these exercises, perfecting your technique and performance, so why not trust your body and try to relax? If you are tense or worried that will come across to the examiners and will make your dancing appear less fluid.

Lastly, and most importantly, HAVE FUN! A smile goes a long way! The examiners want to see how much you enjoy dancing and that this is something you really love to do, so don’t forget to give them your best and brightest smile!

:)

Welcome Back from Ms. Veronica Cappadocia!

Welcome Back!
I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing holiday.  Feeling well rested is a great way to get ready for the Winter term.  Preparations for our year end gala performance are in motion, revealing details of what to expect in May.
The theme, which will be carried throughout the show, is Alice in Wonderland.  The story of Alice in Wonderland is about a young girl named Alice, who descends into a rabbit hole, finding a new atmosphere that seems backward from hers.  She bumps into a few characters along the way finding adventure, fear, and herself.
Choreography is incredibly important to be apart of, therefore encouraging our students not to miss any classes.  If a student falls behind in choreography, please be sure to catch up prior to the next class.
A reminder that In-House Exams will be taking place in the following classes:
Monday the 9th – Saturday the 14th for all Ballet and Pointe classes (Levels 1 and up)
Monday the 16th – Saturday the 21st for all Jazz and Tap classes (Levels 1 and up)
WSD cannot wait to begin the next term! See you all soon!

The Nutcracker: A Classic Comes to Life for Christmas

The Nutcracker is a timeless and classic two-act ballet that has woven it’s way through the times and across continents into the Christmas fantasy’s of dance lovers around the world.

Originally presented in St.Petersburg in 1892, The Nutcracker was choreographed by Marius Petipa based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s Christmas story “The Nutcracker and The Mouse King.” Although it was not widely popular at that time, the score created by Tchaikovsky was instantly recognized for it’s delicacy and intricacy.

The Nutcracker was first performed outside of Russia in 1934. The performance took place in England and was staged by Nicholas Sergeyev. Since then various adaptations of the choreography have been seen on stages all around the world! This season The National Ballet of Canada is presenting this seasonal classic as recreated by James Kudelka in 1995.

How Can You Prevent Burn Out?

Dr. Linda Hamilton refers to “burn out” as overachievers looking for perfection and increasing the demands on their time and energy. As performing artists we tend to fall into that category, constantly working for more, better, faster,  stronger! So here are a few tips from Dr. Hamilton to help keep you from taking on too much and burning out!

1) Research shows that fun is a great antidote to burnout, especially if you do it with a friend. Try to set aside personal time each week to do whatever makes you happy, so long as it isn’t goal-oriented.

2) It’s impossible to be perfect, so stop trying. Everyone makes mistakes. Some are important and can serve as learning experiences; others aren’t a big deal. Find out where you have some leeway, then take it!

3) You don’t need to be superhuman. In fact, it’s useful to ask for help when you need it, including quenching your thirst for recognition for a job well done. Let someone special know when you need a pat on the back.
